Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
