2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Comes After Mixed Reception

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a more defined vision.

The president expressed that the developers is now refining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a more distinct identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our audience.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. Following a period of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.

His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having spent the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting him in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the progress of the game in the time to come.

David

Background of the New Leader

The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Then, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as creation continues.
